I have a weak spot for music videos
Dec. 7th, 2004 07:58 amWe have basic cable (for Simpsons and SNL as we have shitty reception, though I certainly am a sucker for QEFTSG, and J. will watch anything that involves welding), and it disappoints me often that it does not include the MTV of my youth, once a staple of basic cable, now just a concept too alien for producers to get. Why is that? It is so simple, why fuck it up? I guess for the same reason mint flavored toothpaste won't do for children today, when bubblegum flavored is availble. Ug.
Anyhow...as I read EW to keep up with teen culture, I am happy when it alerts me to new music videos. I've watched Scissor Sisters nearly to the point of nausea now (I adore their cover of Comfortably Numb...but I'm a sucker for well executed covers). And now the first thing to put a big smile on my face (ok, make that second...I also discovered today that Bud Cort is in The Life Aquatic) today is We're All to Blame by Sum 41. The contrast between the music (which reminds me of things I was into in college...nice fast metal-ly stuff), the message, and fake Solid Gold Dancers. Weeee! Plus one of the guys in the band is wearing a No Skinny Chicks shirt. Whats not to love?
Also enjoyable is The Donna's Fall Behind Me, also a throwback visually to my youth...one big black light poster come to life, complete with panthers and unicorns.
My all time favorite of the year is still Modest Mouse's Float On. It is visually one of the most interesting and intricate videos I've ever seen...both chilling and silly.
