Kanye an otaku? Hardly.

The ultimate comic book geek is the “otaku”–a pejorative Japanese term for those obsessed with anime and manga–and now some are placing that label on Kanye West, of all people. West’s “Stronger” music video recreates scenes from the anime classic “Akira”, and he is reportedly working on a manga-style book with animator Bill Plympton.
An interesting article about some nice cross cultural connections going on. But what makes my head spin is the Kanye West and Bill Plympton combination. Eh? A quick search reveals Plympton did a video for him in 2005 I guess I missed that connection. Facinating.

ps...I am enjoying Stronger way too much.

Then we went to the new Olympic Sculpture Park. I'm a big fan of contemporary art, but to be honest, I found this place a little disappointing. I did like these two things though:
A big shiny thing. A captive nurse log.
There was another thing I liked that had humor to it, but I forgot to take its picture. And a big shiny tree, too.
photography of Jill Greenberg
Apr. 11th, 2007 11:12 pmWhen I saw reproductions of Greenberg's Monkey Portraits, I knew I had to check it out. And I just love them. I'm a big fan of portraiture, and these really capture the personalities and emotional states of their subjects in an amazing way.
But then, as I researched them for this blog (and my awesome new monkey icons) I saw she has also done a set called End Times of young children crying. Be sure to read the titles, they really add to the photos. Distressing, and amazing stuff.

101 list - #11 - Go to the Burke Museum
Mar. 18th, 2007 06:39 pmThis afternoon I made it to the Burke Museum with my friend qtilla. It was a nice little museum, with every thing seeming to be of high quality and nicely put together, but not very large. My favorite thing of the day was this contemporary Native drum design:

I love how it incorporates that layered silhouette thing that you see all over the place now days (but I haven't gotten tired of yet), and that the wolf is frisky and appealing. The whole balance and colors of it really delights me.
Overall, I recommend this museum for families who don't want to be exhausted, but want to share good quality stuff with their kiddos.
