I always think of myself as a good sleeper. I generally fall asleep pretty easily (often on the couch watching a DVD), and sleep soundly with good dreams. I've believed for a while that 5 or 6 hours was plenty of sleep for me. When things changed, I could not say. Lately I've been waking up after 4 or so hours. It used to be this was a time when I would quickly use the bathroom, then fall back asleep for another 2 or 3 hours. Now it often involves laying in bed trying to fall back asleep for another hour. Then finally, after laying in the dark, waking up again in another hour. Repeat a few more times. And my dream recall is WAY down.  I'm hoping getting back into exercising will help.

Last night, or rather this morning, I slept for 4 hours. I went for my mile swim yesterday, then [info]capn_jil came over and I fell asleep watching on of my all time favorite movies, which she had not seen: M.  After she took off, I decided to finish downloading a backlog of photos off my camera and up onto flickr.  I also did a bit of research on plumbers.  There is nothing like waking up in the dark and thinking about how much it is going to cost you to be able to get back to normal laundry, shower, and consistent flushing, for not falling back to sleep.  But this is a bullet that must be bitten...putting it off will only kill future sleep.

In an hour I am going snowshoeing.  Hopefully that will exhaust me enough for a full 8 hours tonight.  Wish me luck.

I called Plant Amnesty, and got a number for a tree specialist. He called this morning to tell me that he had driven by, and didn't think I needed to worry about my tree for a few more years. Though the smallest branches have reached the power lines, until the big branches are actually at a level where they can disrupt the wires I don't need to worry. At that point they can make big changes in the pruning, but he really didn't think anything needed to be done this year. Plus, he said, if they cut it down this year, or five years from now it will be about the same price (probably $500)...it will be "chop chop chop and into the shredder" either way.

It is so nice to get reassurance on this.

Also, this weekend my dad came over. He painted the last bit of asbestos on the basement duct work, we wrapped all the ducts up so they will be cozy for winter, I painted the basement door purple with the leftover paint (and may use it on other parts of the house), and dad brought the lawnmower in to be tuned and sharpened for me.

That is four things less to worry about. Soon I will be able to settle down for a long, cozy winter free of house repairs (knock on wood). Once the bathroom is done...

I am so happy with my glass brick window.  There is some orange that comes through (paint on the opposite wall), that you can't see in this photo, but looks lovely.  The best present ever for me, would be if someone could find this Urban Outfitters shower curtain.  This one desperately needs replacing, and it goes great with my vision for the bathroom, and I have not been able to find it again (this one is the second I've gone through).

I really do need to get a frame for that Loch Ness Monster painting above the toilet.

I've been very concerned about the willow in my front yard.  When I bought the house, it was wee and quite cute.  (And wow...look how green the lawn once was!)  At the time, I hoped it would get big enough that I couldn't see the old guy across the street peering at me from his windows.  Now you can't even see his house!  [info]lara7 calls it the Womping Willow.  It is creeping over the walk in a bad way.  I'm more worried about it reaching the lines above (which it appears to have this summer).

But there is some good news.  A few months ago my friend Paul sent me a link to the city's Sewer Card lookup.  This is brilliant.  It shows you where the sewer line runs (The red lines...I added the tree and blacked out the numbers).  I was totally worried that the willow was digging down into my sewer line.  My neighbor (same guy) had warned me the sewer ran under the next door driveway.  And it is totally true!  A pain if it ever needs to be dug up, but very unlikely to be impacted by tree roots.  Hooray!

Next step - contact PlantAmnest  for advice.

Earlier this month I went to Second Use and scoped things out.  There is so much cool stuff there, but so little that I really need or can justify putting into my place at this point.  However, this weekend I went back and bought 14 glass bricks.   I took my time and really tried to get nice ones without chips or scratches.  I think I only need 12, but 2 extras can't hurt, just in case.  The plan is they will go above my shower, bringing in some natural light to my bathroom.  Now I'm in the process of cleaning them all.  Whew!

so tired!

I just got done spending a few HOURS weed-whacking my yard.  My arms hurt so much, I can barely hold them up to read or type.  Looks like I will be spending the rest of the afternoon lounging about and watching DVDs.

It wouldn't have been so bad...but last year I tried to save money by buying a huge reel of weed-whacker cable, rather than pre-loaded cartridges. It did not work very well, ran out fast, and was hard to get to stay in place.  I was frequently discouraged, and ended up not keeping up with my edging very well.  But last weekend I went and got regular refills, and today went through 2 and a half of them.  I even did a bit on my neighbor's side of the fence...since he was nice enough to mow the bit of my lawn outside the fence this week (I hope we can work out an ongoing arrangement...he always mows his lawn much shorter...makes me look terrible ;)

Anyhow, relatively speaking, it is still cheaper than hiring a service, and I got a work out.  I was going to hire a service to come out and do this, plus aerate the lawn...but eh one I called never called me back.  And with all the asbestos and furnace expenses, its probably for the best.  But it feels great to have those things finally taken care of!
