It used to be that when I had PMS nothing could make me weepy quite like thinking about drowning polar bears.

Then I read this article on the decline of amphibians.

Woe!

I worked 10 days in a row so I could go to Spokane for 5, then worked another 3 days...all looking forward to an excellent, relaxing 4-day weekend.  Today I've felt a bit dehydrated, but good overall.  But ever since my brother called to report his fever is up to 103, and that mom is taking him to urgent care first thing in the morning because the doctor thinks he has the extremely contagious strep throat (which first showed visible symptoms Christmas Eve)...I'm starting to feel a little paranoid.  Is that odd feeling in my throat the start of something nasty?  Or nothing at all?

I can not think of a much worst time to get sick.  I really don't want to get sick.  I've been sick for New Years Eve at least 3 times in the last 8 years that I can remember.  If I am sick this one, I am going to cry.  Truly I will.

...this really really bums me out:

Continent-size toxic stew of plastic trash fouling swath of Pacific Ocean

Egads!  Why aren't people freaking out about this?

If only someone could melt it down into a faux ice cap for all the poor drowning polar bears.

I called Plant Amnesty, and got a number for a tree specialist. He called this morning to tell me that he had driven by, and didn't think I needed to worry about my tree for a few more years. Though the smallest branches have reached the power lines, until the big branches are actually at a level where they can disrupt the wires I don't need to worry. At that point they can make big changes in the pruning, but he really didn't think anything needed to be done this year. Plus, he said, if they cut it down this year, or five years from now it will be about the same price (probably $500)...it will be "chop chop chop and into the shredder" either way.

It is so nice to get reassurance on this.

Also, this weekend my dad came over. He painted the last bit of asbestos on the basement duct work, we wrapped all the ducts up so they will be cozy for winter, I painted the basement door purple with the leftover paint (and may use it on other parts of the house), and dad brought the lawnmower in to be tuned and sharpened for me.

That is four things less to worry about. Soon I will be able to settle down for a long, cozy winter free of house repairs (knock on wood). Once the bathroom is done...

I've been very concerned about the willow in my front yard.  When I bought the house, it was wee and quite cute.  (And wow...look how green the lawn once was!)  At the time, I hoped it would get big enough that I couldn't see the old guy across the street peering at me from his windows.  Now you can't even see his house!  [info]lara7 calls it the Womping Willow.  It is creeping over the walk in a bad way.  I'm more worried about it reaching the lines above (which it appears to have this summer).

But there is some good news.  A few months ago my friend Paul sent me a link to the city's Sewer Card lookup.  This is brilliant.  It shows you where the sewer line runs (The red lines...I added the tree and blacked out the numbers).  I was totally worried that the willow was digging down into my sewer line.  My neighbor (same guy) had warned me the sewer ran under the next door driveway.  And it is totally true!  A pain if it ever needs to be dug up, but very unlikely to be impacted by tree roots.  Hooray!

Next step - contact PlantAmnest  for advice.

Being a homeowner can be worrisome.  After I replaced the furnace, I crossed my fingers and knock on wood all the time hoping I won' t have to deal with any more big repairs for a long while.

But a girl gets worried sometimes.  Today, while out doing a bit of weeding (my goal is 5 minutes minimum of yard work a day for the month of June), I noticed a crack in my lawn.  Under the tree.  Out by where the sewer line is supposed to be.  And suddenly I am paranoid that this is a sign of some terrible, huge repair in the waiting.  Google was no help, as crack and lawn just brings up stuff about faulty lawnmowers.

Anyone ever heard of such a thing?  Any advice? Ack!
