5 questions jillbertini asked me 5 questions. Here are my answers.

1 - how did you pick teen librarianship for your area?

I was exposed to really great teen services when I was a teen. I assumed all libraries had such services, and was very surprised to find how rare they were at the time. I considered other avenues, but I noticed when I talked about teens stuff, that is when I got really passionate and fired up about things.

2 - what is the furthest you've traveled from WA state?

I believe that would be Budapest. I was there in 1993 for a few days in July and really loved it. It was incredibly cheap and filled with movie theaters. You could stay in a youth hostel for about $6 a night and eat great food for nearly nothing. I met one British fellow who lived with his mom back in England and had a somewhat pathetic life, but once a year he went there and lived like a king for a few weeks. He took me and my friend on a carriage ride. One of my favorite memories of that city was watching Singles on the 4th of July when I was feeling particularly homesick.

3 - what is your favorite yoga pose?

Savasana! I know that is super goofy, but I love love love it. After all that work and stretching and concentration, it feels so good to finally just lay there and rest. And I appreciate it so much more for the work I've just done. If I was ever asked to pose for a yoga calendar, that is the pose I would choose :)

4 - other than WA and Illinois, have you lived in any other states, and for how long if so?

I lived in Oregon for a year, between college and grad school. I temped the whole time and lived in a crazy group house, and wouldn't want to do that again, but I really like Portland and would totally move there if the right job opened up.

5 - what is your favorite thing about living in Seattle?

I love how wet it is. Every time I visit Eastern WA I feel parched and out of my element. Back in Seattle I breath easier. Admittedly the long gray wet winters wear me down, but warm spring rains rejuvenate me like nothing else. I just wish we had more thunderstorms in the summer.

Let me know if you want me to ask you 5 questions, or if you have 5 questions you would like to ask me.

DIRECTIONS:
* reply to this post with the word MEME and I will pick a few of your icons.
* make a post (including this sort of info) and talk about the icons I chose.
* other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
* icon enthusiasm ensues

This photo was taken in the elevator of a hotel I was staying at in Boston a few winters ago.  I was mesmerized by the delightful reflective/refractive paneling and wanted to remember how pleased I felt to be there.

This icon I stole from somewhere on the internet when looking for a good umbrella image.  I was hoping to find something that would be good for rainy days, as we have so many of them here in Seattle...but found it was just a good, sad, out-of-sorts icon, too.

This was taken at the Queen Mary Tea House.  I like the photo as it is silly, faux-prim, slightly disguised, and a foodie shot all in one!

* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST

It's also possible to combine the various kinds of pleasure in one's reaction to a single thing - if most beauty isn't unalloyed, that doesn't mean it's not present at all.

Any guesses as to who on my friends list wrote this?

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want — good or bad. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.

(You should answer even if you only have online memories of me.)

Tonight I am in the mood to blog. So I am doing this, even though [profile] johnaegarddidn't actually tag me, since he didn't actually tag anyone.

Here are the rules: Each person tagged blogs 7 random facts about themselves, as well as the rules of the game. You need to tag seven others and list their names on your blog. You have to leave those you plan on tagging a note in their comments so they know that they have been tagged and to read your blog.

I too am lazy.  Tag thyselves, readers (I think there about 7 of you who read this regularly) ;)

1.  I like costume jewelry and have very little interest in real "precious" stones.
2.  I love swimming so much that I have been called a fish, and took it as a high complement.
3.  My band still doesn't have a name.  I want it to somehow involve squid and bacon.
4.  I kicked ass on the PSAT.
5.  I enjoy driving far too much.
6.  I like skinny-dipping, but only if I think I won't get caught.
7.  I can't imagine life without peppermint flavored gum.

gacked from [livejournal.com profile] jillbertini

Comment and I will give you 3 interests on your list for you to explain about.

Here is what [livejournal.com profile] jillbertini gave me:

gifting - I've always enjoyed the exchanging of presents, but gifting as a philosophy is something I picked up in the Burning Man community. The idea is that you can have a sharing of presents for no good reason, but for the joy of it. And rather than bartering knickknacks and souvenirs(which was prevalent for a while there) it was encouraged that if something is worth sharing, that should be reason enough for sharing it, not because you expect anything else. I like to get people random gifts, just because it is the perfect gift. I hate buying presents that are forced for the occasion...not because I don't care about the person...but getting something just because, and not because it is a great gift is a letdown. I also like to think about non-materials things you can gift people with, like a little note in the mail, or just listening really well.

ginger - As a kid, the only ginger I knew was the powdered stuff that my mom put in gingerbread cookies. So it was really exciting to me to discover real ginger as an adult and how lovely it is to cook with. And also candied ginger. And ginger Altoids. And ginger beer. I love the flavor of ginger. But I still love gingerbread, too.

bassoon - I took up the bassoon in 7th grade, as my band teacher played and wanted someone to give it a try. I played up until my junior year in college, even learning how to make my own reeds! I really enjoyed it, but never felt confident enough to aspire to being a professional. Someday, when all my debts are paid off, I'd love to get one of my own and take it up again.

gacked and question from [livejournal.com profile] bookchick

Comment and I'll give you a topic for either a top five or a top ten.

I was given: Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Songs That You Sing At the Top of Your Lungs in the Car During Road Trips!

1) "Where Oh Where Are You Tonight" - from Hee Haw.
2) The entire album "Live Through This" by Hole.
3) "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim
4) "No Good Here" by Tim Fite
5) "Car" by Built to Spill (I had never seen this great video before...apparently made completely from Library of Congress footage!)
6) "Heaven of My Heart" by Jim White
7) "The Bucket" by Kings of Leon
8) "Purple Bottle" by Animal Collective (someone's very art school home-made video, but the best sound I could find).
9) "A Little Bit Lonesome" by Kasey Chambers
10) "Anthem for a Seventeen-Year Old Girl" - Broken Social Scene

This was fun...I found videos for lots of my favorite songs that I hadn't seen! Admittedly, the last one can't be sung at the top of one's lungs, but it is great for late night driving.
