This is proving to be an interesting weekend.  As I left work yesterday, I realized I had not made any plans for the weekend, and that I wanted to get out and have fun.  I have discovered myself to have vast stores of energy I did not expect.  So far this weekend I:

1) went out for Ethiopian food with a huge group of people
2) played pool in a dive bar (the jukebox had so much bass I expected the balls to be shaking)
3) went dancing until 2am
4) hung out until 3am
5) got up at 8:30am and went and swam a mile
6) went on a 4 mile hike
7) took a 10 minute cat nap
8) went out for sushi
9) hung out until after midnight
10) took another wee cat nap
11) drove home
12) have found myself to be mysteriously wakeful

I'm frankly amazed with myself.  I've reserved tomorrow for doing absolutely nothing, but already I'm feeling urges to go running and do a major house cleaning/purging.

Listening to the new Kanye West album, I caught a reference to OJ and Isotoners, and recalled that my favorite Jim White album also made such a reference.  Which got me curious to how widely this is being used as a musical theme.  Good thing I know a librarian:

Jim White - When Jesus Gets a Brand New Name
Kanye West - Stronger
Sonic Youth - O.J.'s Glove Or What?
Bruce Cockburn - When You Give It Away
La the Darkman - 4 Souls
The Boss Hog Barbarians - Bo$$ Hoggin'
DJ Envy - Grand Theft Auto
Dom Pachino - Da Score
Da Manchuz - Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got
Psychopathic Rydas - Ride Off
Brotha Lynch Hung - Mr. No Print
Hilltop Hoods - Monsters Ball
Beatnuts - I Love It
Rihanna - The One
Def Squad - The Game
Masta Ace - Something's Wrong
Jumpsteady - Ninjas In Action

Plus a parody variations:
Tainted Love - Ain't His Glove
Walk This Way - The OJ Simpson Trial

And a bunch of comedy things not even worth mentioning.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more.  I only did a brief search.  But if I was a pop culture theorist, I would totally be writing a paper on this right now.

new growth

When I first moved to Seattle, I raised an avocado from a seed and it got to be over a foot tall, but then it died when I was out of town and a friend of my dad's was staying at the place.  I was bummed, and have been trying to get another one going again.  Finally, one of the seeds has taken!

Here are helpful hints on how to do this right.  Last time I missed the step about pinching it back.  I've also read you should do this around 6 inches, which I'm leaning towards for fullness.

Also along the lines of new growth, I feel like I have reached a new plateau in health.  I'm doing a mile when swimming as a regular thing new.  The ankle binding has worked great (I haven't fallen down once since starting it), and I've been running more regularly than ever.  And I've started going to yoga classes every week again.  I feel very energetic and am starting to get that exercise high you hear about.  Its lovely.  Plus, yesterday at the pool I had a good yoga moment, and had a sense of opening in my chest that I don't think I've physically had since I pulled my sternum ten years ago.  The emotional correlation feels great, too.

Today went by much too quickly.  I didn't have time to do nothing, and also get all the things done I was thinking about, surprisingly enough.  Just time for dishes, laundry, tidying, a run, downtown to see the newest version of Blade Runner at the Cinerama (I forgot how breathtakingly beautiful it is...so nice to see it on such a big screen), home for dinner, and finish up a movie I fell asleep during last week.

Before I go to bed I will finish one project I've been meaning to get to: bedroom window treatments.  Washing the boring white curtains I've had up for ages (but do make for nice light).  Insulating the window with no storm enclosure. And then adding on another layer...new curtains I picked up at Ikea a while back.  They still let a ton of light in, and the design was too weird to resist.  I'll post a picture once they are done and light is coming in from outside.
