Hello all.

My camera is pretty much dead (no, I do not consider sticking a paperclip in it a viable option).

Anyhow, if you, are someone close to you has a digital camera they are absolutely in LOVE with, please let me know what it is. I was pretty happy with my last one (Cannon SureShot S330), but I want two improvements: better close up photos (the micro-er the better) and to be able to blow up and print (hopefully up to 11x17) better.

Thanks!

what's wrong with it?

what is wrong with your camera? If you're just leaving it for dead, you can send it to me and *I'll* stick a paperclip in it.

The button you push to take the picture has gone missing.

Enlargement and printing, with digital cameras, is largely a matter of Photoshop and profiles. It's complicated, but doable, and less dependent on raw number of megapixels for sharpness that film enlargements were dependent on size of negative (35mm, 4x5 or whatever).

You could probably spend the same amount of money as you spent on your dead camera and get what you want as far as close up capabilities.

Also, putting off learning Photoshop and learning the camera is a good tactic, despite what I said in the first paragraph. ;>

We like our Nikon CoolPix P2, which was pretty inexpensive because it was no longer the current brand-new now now now model.

The things we did in shopping: we remembered to say we wanted maximum optical zoom and that we didn't care about digital zoom (because digital zoom is something you can do in Photoshop, as Luke says), and we asked for the geekiest clerk in the camera store. If the clerk thinks being a camera geek is insulting, go somewhere else. You want to get help from someone who cares about whether you get a good camera for the money, not because the clerk cares about you particularly (oh my no) but because the clerk has a pure and passionate devotion to decent cameras.

You will get the same good deals at camera stores that you get at discount stores or Frye's, except for doorbusters, which are usually not the best things of their kind to buy, whether cameras or washing machines or printer paper, so you might as well buy from someone who just sells cameras rather than someone who also sells iPods and computers and microwaves and radio-controlled miniature airplanes.

I've liked the cannon a-70 series. My son has the A-75 but you should be able to get something that will do what you by checking out http://www.dpreview.com/ there's a side by side comparison of price and features that comes up when you click buying guide on the left side.
