Boing Boing (which I have started skimming more regularly now that I've finally figured out rss readers) featured an interesting article this week: Drinking and smoking worse than acid and X.

Alcohol and tobacco are more "harmful" than LSD and ecstasy, according to a new study published in scientific medical journal the Lancet.Researchers from Bristol University and the UK's Medical Research hey developed a "matrix of harm" to classify 20different drugs.

The idea being that society does not fairly treat the users of illegal vs. legal drugs, based on the harm the drugs (or the users) have on society. I think what is not mentioned here is the unspoken, but perceived threat currently illegal drugs are seen to have on the collective consciousness of society. That truly conservative thinkers do not want to see a rapid acceleration of society in creative ways (or deviant as they might describe them), that these types of intoxicants seem to inspire at some level.

On the other hand, would legalizing said drugs enable idiots to be even bigger fuck-ups? Or for children to have greater access to things harmful to their growth and development?

Regardless of these questions, I do believe as someone who has a drug and alcohol therapist for a father, and has at one time been personally involved with an alcoholic, that there definitely need to be major changes in the way our society looks at addiction, legal issues relating to the War on Drugs, and also the impact of legal engineered drugs, too.

Interesting stuff for sure.

So this weekend my computer decided it won't play sound on YouTube, or any other Internet files. Still is fine for in-computer audio players and cds and such. Huh.

And now it is being mind-numbingly slow to load pages.

Perhaps it needs a tune-up?
