So we have had Qwest the last year, and aside from not having as good as coverage as we had expected and getting some shitty roaming charges on vacations, we have generally been satisfied. Rarely lose calls, etc... But now they are changing their network and telling us our phones will no longer be compatible with this new network and we have until the 13th (ok, I've been sitting on this a few weeks) to decide what plan to switch to or find a new company. Due to the amount of minutes I negotiated for our current plan, the equivalent their computer "suggested" cost over twice as much! I find this a little outrageous and am shopping around. Any recommendations? I'm seriously considering ATT at this point.

Two comments, the off-topic one being the more important one, I think:

On-topic: I use Working Assets Long Distance and Working Assets Wireless services. Working Assets (http://www.workingassets.com/) donates part of its proceeds to various progressive causes, and also is deeply involved in organizing for social change. Their service is good, though not excellent: they lease lines and air time from the Sprint network.

Off-Topic: You've probably come across the young adult novel Hoot (http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=8-0375829164-0), by Carl Hiaasen: it was a Newberry Award winner, but I highly, highly recommend it for your library, both for teens and adults. I'm a fan of Hiaasen's adult fiction, and I thought Hoot was one of his best books. It's smart, funny and moving.

I used to have Working Assets for Long Distance, and considered using their wireless service for the reasons you mentioned, but as we only have cell phones I decided I needed a bit better service than what they seemed to offer. But I will check into them again, to see if things have improved since I last researched...they certainly are up my political alley.

I have read Hoot, and had my teen book group read it too! I really enjoyed it too. I have to confess it is the only Hiaasen book I have read...what adult book would you recommend?

My three favorite novels are Tourist Season, Skin Tight and Native Tongue. His best nonfiction book is Team Rodent: How Disney Devours the World, which is a must-read, I think.

Looks like my system has them all on tape (my prefered way to read adult books ;)

Thanks for the recommendations.

You're very welcome. Interesting that you prefer adult fiction on tape: I hate audio books. I find them tedious even on long driving trips—I just can't get pulled into them the way I can with the written word.

In any case, I'd be interested in what you think of Hiaasen's adult books.
