100,000 miles

Last night I decide rather than drive home on the usual freeway, I would cut through the industrial area between my house and downtown Seattle. I enjoy this drive, and the odd little things you can spot if you are paying attention. And as I only do when I have a full bladder, I got caught waiting
for the crossing of a a very slow moving freight train. To amuse myself, as frequently is the case, I decided to play with my camera. I was surprised to realize that I have put over 100,000 miles on my car. That is a lot of driving. A ton of driving. I've spent more time in this car than some people spend with their relatives. Part of me feels this is just fine. I like my car. I enjoy driving it. I've been on all sorts of excellent adventures in it, and I hope to get another 100,000 miles out of it (though I'd be satisfied with 50,000). That car seat is as comfortable as any piece of furniture I've owned (and none of my other chairs have ass warmers).
But on the other hand, I just reviewed a graphic novel about global warming and was reminded once again, this much driving...its BAD. Bad for pollution, bad for resource depletion, bad for many many things.
So what am I going to do? Right now I don't want to sell my house, and I don't want to quit my job. But I'm starting to think that once I have mastered this job, it might be time to move to a more centralized system in a medium to large city, where I can get rid of the car and go back to public transportation full time, as I did in Chicago. Not just now. But something to aim for.
