garbage duty and a good show
Apr. 16th, 2006 02:00 amToday was a very long but good day.
I visited a friend last night and came home early with an upset stomach, so I made a pot of ginger tea and retired to my bed with a book. I passed out before even pouring a cup of tea and woke up at 5am. Bah! However, this did give me time to read, go to the grocery store, make scones, and start a crock pot of split pea soup before meeting up with my neighborhood association at 9:30 for a scheduled cleaning and landscaping project.
I didn't feel particularly useful at this (and only 4 of my scones got eaten...someone else made the same thing, with better presentation (basket with cute towel vs. my ziplock bag)), and ended up spending an awful lot of time crawling around on the ground picking up trash, and daringly reaching into shrubs to extract all sorts of nasty things...mostly bottles and the packaging for those single serving cigarettes (what a waste of packaging and a mess!). The most surprising thing I found was a coffee cup lid on top of a bush, picked up to reveal about a half foot down a full cup of coffee. Who sets a hot beverage on a bush? For that matter, what the hell is up with litterers? There is a trash can within 10 feet of all these poor retched bushes. People!
The weather took a turn to icky, so I dragged home a container full of yard waste and my two shovels, let the perturbed and wet cat in the house, and spent the afternoon reading, chatting on the phone, and tidying the house.
Later, my friend G. came over and enjoyed the soup (which came out terrific), and we drove to Ballard to see a show. Having not snuck in a disco nap, I was a wee bit concerned the show would not go well, and the opening bands bored me silly (thank goodness for people watching, and having some company), but once Jon Langford, Sally Timms and company came on it was all goodness. I had forgotten that in addition to enjoying his/their music, and really liking both their voices, they have the most delightful banter. And for one of the encore songs, they played Wild and Blue, which I love and remembered well enough to sing along to...but realized I had no idea where I knew it from, unless Mekons shows. Afterwards, I went to buy a cd and J.L. was right there, so I made a point to say thank you and express my delight, and got a nice handshake and a few moments of eye contact...which gave me the courage to go thank Sally, too. Not physical contact there, but my appreciation was acknowledged, and that is good enough for this fan girl.
